Internet of Things Survey Computer Networks
Question: Discuss about the Internet of Things for Survey Computer Networks. Answer: Introduction The organisation chosen as the case study in this report has been a small sized research and development business organisation in Melbourne. The research topic focuses on the internet of things, as a result of which the organisation which has been focused on is interested in the potential applications of internet of things or IoT in various fields. The Chief Executive Officer or CEO had asked to conduct research on the various applications of internet of things within the organisation so as to find out how it could be beneficial for serving people in different ways. The present report mainly revolves around the development of two new kinds of IoT applications in the next five years. The applications must be developed in order to serve for commercial purposes both within the local and global business environment. The executive report would be prepared basically so that it could be presented in the next meeting where various executives and professionals would be present for discussing about the various potential applications of IoT within this research and Development Company based n Melbourne (Atzori et al, 2010). The objectives that must be achieved according to the case study would be researching on the applications of IoT that would be developed for preventing various issues and problems like computer hacking, improper medication facilities, etc. The cloud computing had been utilized for the proper applications of IoT which could help in collecting data with the help of sensors in the network. The application used in smart phones that sent data would be stored in the Cloud database that could be later retrieved for various other purposes (Bandyopadhyay Sen, 2011). The IoT applications had also been beneficial for maintaining steady temperature as well as the sensors could help in identifying data that were sent to the doctors for changing any medication or dosage prescribed for the patients within health and social care too. The IoT applications could also b e present in businesses, for the production and manufacturing of products and services in an effective manner. Though there are several benefits of these kinds of applications, still there sometimes could be privacy issues that might hinder the security of data as well. So, the CEO of organisation had asked for a proper research report based on the applications of IoT that could be beneficial and effective (Coetzee Eksteen, 2011). Internet of Things and its Application Internet of Things one of the revolutionary concepts of the contemporary age of IT has created a huge buzz in the society. Even though the concept is still unknown to a large number of people but they do use IOT at every juncture of their lives. Right from the concept of simple GPS to the complicate healthcare service each and everything is influenced by internet of things. The application of internet of things is quite visible in the present market as a lot of consumers have become highly interested in learning more about it. Hence as a software company it is important for us to focus on the understanding of IOT and its uses and applications in the commercial world both locally and globally. It is important that the company understands the very marketable approach for IOT and its essentiality in the market at present as well as in the future. Internet of Things is a very cream concept if used effectively by the companies and hence for that significant knowledge of IOT is extremely i mportant (Miorandi et al., 2012 p, 34). The present section will take an opportunity to discuss the different aspects of IOT and its use in the market both commercially and socially. IOT and its current use From the technical point of view Internet of Things could be described as the technology which connects 3 dimensional objects with the internet. In a laymans term IOT connects the internet with the physical world with the help of physical objects with the help of internet networking. It could connect wearable media which are then connected as applications with the help of Bluetooth. The concept of IOT is not old and comparatively new coming to existence in the late 90s. The concept of internet of things has revolutionized the internet market and has helped different fields to encash its facilities. The standards initiative of IOT is an information society which helps to interconnect the physical objects with the world that has no barriers and could easily work with the help of internet. It could be said that the world is on the verge of technological big bang under the leadership of internet of things. From the late 90s to the present day IOT has developed to be one of the main conce pts for software companies as its future scope is likely to increase in the coming few decades and hence a lot of software companies have tried to cash in on the huge prospect of growth that this technology bears (Atzori et al., 2010 p, 21). Mainly the Internet of Things is developed using sensors and Bluetooth devices which helps the three dimensional objects to get connected with the internet and respond to the different instructions sent by the central servers handling the sensors that is basically placed in the cloud. At the present moment Internet of Things is what everybody is talking about and hence it could be seen all over the web from the tech blogs to the forums everywhere IOT is a popular topic. It is not only a popular topic nowadays but has also developed to be a handy technology for different fields which has helped different industries to provide effective solutions to the consumers. It is important to mention that in the recent past IOT has crossed the level beyond incredulity. The technology has been used in Toothbrushes, central locking system, house temperature controlling et cetera (Mattern Floerkemeier, 2010 p, 56). Internet of Things is being used in different industries some of the significant are healthcare, manufacturing, productions et cetera. The concept of manufacturing is on the cusp of revolution with the introduction of internet of things in the industry. As Stated by the scholars the Internet of Things is likely to improve the manufacturing process which has very visible so far. Smart Manufacturing is what it is called now. One of the most essential parts of manufacturing is supply chain and the supply chain has been effectively streamlined with the help of IOT. With information available all time the companies are able to speed up or slow down the manufacturing. The Internet of Things has helped to develop robotic functions which have helped the multinational companies to continue their manufacturing procedure with the help of androids that has helped to compete in this highly competitive market environment. One of the biggest automotive company Harley Davidson has lubricated its man ufacturing procedures with the help of internet of things as all the assets and plants in the manufacturing area are connected and the entire procedure is tracked which helps to identify the loopholes and act accordingly (Coetzee Eksteen, 2011 p, 45). In healthcare as well IOT has been largely successful. This technology has helped doctors to be in touch with the patients even if they are not in the hospitals with highly developed technical device for instance Health Patch. It is a health monitoring system which helps the doctors to monitor the health of a patient even when they are out. IT could track the respiratory troubles of the patient, heart rate, skin temperature, fall detections. The device is useful as it lets the doctor know about the potential trouble before hand and helps to take positive actions regarding them. RFID tags used in the inventory management are effective enough to develop the production procedure of a company. The RFID tags are useful in keeping track of the inventory its expiry dates, regular track of stocks as well as their security (Vermesan et al., 2011 p, 67). Two applications that could be developed by the organisation With the introduction of the IOT software industry has become highly competitive. There are number of companies who are developing IOT applications in order to sustain in the market. There are many companies on software market who have succumbed to the pressure and hence it is extremely important for us to focus on a sustainable business path. Developing IOT applications is the need of the hour and hence it is essential that decisions to develop IOT applications are taken in a very prudent way. There is wide range of choices but it is important for the company to make assiduous decisions to sustain and compete for a long term. Presently IOT is being used in different industries and markets and hence the company has different options open for the business. With the advent of IOT the healthcare industry has been largely boosted and is likely to develop in the coming five years which offers a huge scope to the company for making IOT devices that will facilitate healthcare industry. The healthcare concerns among people have increased rapidly and hence this is the right time for the IOT products to boom in the healthcare market which provides the right platform to the company to cash on in this scenario (Perera et al., 2014 p, 78). The company should focus on developing device specifically for the people affected with diabetes. As per the International Diabetes Federation the total number of patients affected with diabetes has risen from 30 million to 230 million which is a growing concern for the people. In this scenario being able to develop a device that will help to track the blood pressure, blood sugar, of the patient, regulate the body temperature, keep the body well balanced and always connected with the concerned doctors and healthcare companies will be effective in dealing and mitigating diabetes cases. If something could be design that could control the diabetes by itself will help the company to gain upper hand in the market. On the other hand Medication dispensing services is also an effective device which would help to develop the medial facilities and help the patients as well. Overall it could be said that developing IOT devices for healthcare would be a judicious choice (Heer et al., 2011 p, 98) . On the other hand going for the smart home and connected home concept is also a unique and effective concept which is likely to accentuate in the market in the coming five years and hence modifying IOT devices like Thermostat, Air quality eggs and internet connected homes as per the body temperature would be effective in surviving in the market. The concept of connected home is still unknown to many consumers and hence once it comes to limelight it would create a huge boom in the market. Developing these concepts and IOT devices according to them will experience significant competition in the market which will have to be handled effectively. In the smart home concept the concept should go beyond hardware. It is important to mention that the features of the smart home concept will emphasise more on software features. The concept of security is still very weak in IOT. The company should focus on developing security like retina lock, gesture lock are some of the new concepts that the company could seek to develop. Better streamlined alerts and better software integration will help to gain competitive advantage in the market. This will create serious competition as well as not only us but there are number of companies who would seek to develop them and hence there comes an aspect of competition which has to be developed through recommended measures (Van Kranenburg et al., 2011 p, 45). Advantages and Disadvantages of IOT With the advent of internet the human lives are expected to get easier but with internet and the real world merging there could be range of implications that as a software company one has to keep in mind. There are several advantages and disadvantages that IOT has which the software companies have to consider while developing IOT devices. Advantages of IOT The IOT devices of smart home and healthcare make life easier. They notify about the possible issues and help to fix them up. For instance the refrigerator sends a notification to the phone of the owner regarding milk, and the health devices will help to control blood sugar and automatically regulate the sugar level. The machine to machine interaction takes less time. For instance IP based Gesture locks will take less time to lock the doors and windows as it is directly instructed by the cloud based servers. They are energy efficient (Huang Li, 2010 p, 67). Disadvantages of IOT The use of smart home is a threat to security and privacy. IP based locks have information gathered in cloud server and there is a threat to data theft which can affect the privacy of the owners which is illegal. Since the Smart homes are connected with different devices there is a problem of compatibility that one can face. For instance development of RFID tags is done by one company and the Locks and safes are developed by one company can create compatibility problems. This will have to take care by the organisation. The use of smart home concept makes life sedentary which makes the society stagnated and hence the organisation will have to come up with ideas to keep the human brain busy and moving (Bandyopadhyay Sen, 2011 p, 77). Recommendations Keeping in mind the ethical and social aspects of IOT the company should take measures to develop IOT products. In the wake of IOT civilisation the organisation must take the following seriously. IOT security: The Company should not merely rely on passwords for providing safety to smart homes but should also focus on developing other security systems and mainly try to eliminate the use of passwords. Protecting the identity of objects and users is extremely important. For an organisation providing security and safety to the consumers with quality product should be given paramount importance (Van Kranenburg et al., 2011 p, 88). Identity protection and gateway protection is extremely important as an organisation. The IOT device makers should be focused on developing strong and secured gateway which will help to safeguard the information of the consumers. Developing IOT devices is not everything and will have to be consistently put under test so that they are upgraded to the best security possible as well as to see that there is no glitch in the devices or else regulating the health of diabetic patients will not be possible. The Smart Home concept and the healthcare IOT device are traditionally complex systems and hence as a software organisation it is important to ease the complexity in the system and provide the best possible secured service to the consumers (Bandyopadhyay Sen, 2011 p, 81). Conclusion The topic basically revolved around the concept of Internet of Things and how it had been applied for providing convenience and ease of accessibility to general public in different ways. It had been a major implementation of the information technology. It had been mainly created so as to connect to the outside world with the help of sensory elements through technology,. The physical devices had been embedded with different types of software applications and electronic sensors, that had made it easy to track the physical activities and also ensure proper manufacturing and production processes along with delivery of good quality care services within health and social care too. The sensors had also helped in maintaining the heating condition and had often been used in health and social are organizations too for proper data collection, thereby ensuring convenience for the service users. It had also helped in sharing nad exchange of data as well as kept data secure and authenticated from various computer related thefts and hacking activities (Atzori et al, 2010). As a ICT manager of the research and development company, the CEO had asked me to prepare a research by analyzing the various concepts and applications of IoT and then prepare two new applications that could be used for both local and global commercial purposes. The report had also discussed about the various kinds of techniques for securing data and also manages the privacy issues properly with the help of these newly designed IoT applications. The various advantages and disadvantages as well as the implications of internet of things had been demonstrated here which had showed that the goals and objectives had been met. The two new applications had been used for controlling the disease of people suffering from diabetes and also had been used for manufacturing process in well known companies like Harley Davidson (Bandyopadhyay Sen, 2011). Thus, both these new applications had been beneficial along with the RFID tags that had been utilized in the management of inventories system. All these findings and discussions had been covered here so as to achieve the objectives of this report and derive a fruitful conclusion to this research topic.
