A Russian novelist, Maxim Gorky once said, You can t do without philosophy, since everything has its hidden meaning which we must know. Many readers believe that there are no deeper meanings in what is being read. In actuality, there could be many meaning if the reader discovers the symbolism in a piece of literature. In Lord of the Flies, there are many characters and objects that hold a symbolic value. Characters such as Ralph, the protagonist, and Jack, the antagonist, represent many things such as good and evil. But, there are also symbols that are within the title of the book and the name of the chapters. In Golding s Lord of the Flies, the narrator highlights that the story is more than just boys on an island, suggesting that there is a deeper meaning then what is being read. The author depicts that there is a significance of the chapter named The Shell and the Glasses. In Lord of the Flies, Golding often showcases the importance of the conch and Piggy s glasses. This is evident when Ralph says, And another thing. We can t have everybody talking at once. We have to have Hands up like at school. That s what this shell s called. I ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he s speaking(45). Jack shows the significance of Piggy s glasses when he says, His specs-use them as burning glasses!(55).
